How to Hang a Sling

Hanging, or applying, a sling to an injured arm or shoulder immobilizes the affected body part, prevents further injury and helps to relieve pain. Before attempting to apply a sling, however, verify that the injured person is responsive, is not bleeding profusely and does not have life-threatening injuries. Be aware of the possibility of shock; check the injured individual for pale, clammy skin, rapid but shallow breathing, dizziness and confusion. If one of those symptoms is present, it is best to forgo the sling and call 911 for emergency medical help.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold, rip or cut cloth so that it is about 40 inches square. You may use an old sheet, pillowcase, towel or other cloth that is at least 40 inches square. In an emergency, beauty doesn't matter; so rips and jagged edges are not a concern.

    • 2

Fold the 40-inch cloth diagonally to form a triangle.

    • 3

Help the injured person bend his arm gently at the elbow, resting it against his abdomen. Slip one end of the cloth triangle under the injured arm and up over the injured arm's shoulder. Place the other end of the cloth triangle around the injured person's neck so that it meets the first end of the cloth at the shoulder. Tie the cloth triangle's ends together.

    • 4

Fasten a safety pin in the cloth triangle at the elbow. Tie an additional strip of cloth around the injured person's waist, crossing the cloth strip over her injured arm. That cloth further stabilizes the injured arm and shoulder.
