What is the network of spinal nerves called that supplies pelvis and legs?
The sacral plexus
The sacral plexus is a network of spinal nerves that originates from the lower part of the spinal cord. It supplies the pelvis and legs with motor and sensory innervation. The sacral plexus is formed by the union of the fourth and fifth lumbar nerves and the first, second, and third sacral nerves. It gives rise to a number of branches, including the sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in the body. The sciatic nerve runs down the back of the thigh and divides into two branches, the tibial nerve and the common peroneal nerve. These nerves supply the muscles and skin of the lower leg and foot.
The sacral plexus is involved in a number of important functions, including:
* Motor control of the pelvis and legs
* Sensory perception from the pelvis and legs
* Reflexes that control the muscles of the pelvis and legs
Damage to the sacral plexus can result in a number of problems, including:
* Paralysis of the pelvis and legs
* Loss of sensation in the pelvis and legs
* Reflex abnormalities
* Pain
* Difficulty with walking
