What muscles and skeleton do?

Muscles and bones (the skeletal system) work together to give us the ability to move in many ways.

Muscles pull on bones to make us move. Muscles also help us breathe and pump blood. Bones provide a framework for the body, which gives shape to our bodies. Bones also protect organs and help store minerals.

The main types of muscles are:

* Skeletal muscles: These are the muscles that we can consciously control, such as the muscles in our arms and legs.

* Smooth muscles: These are the muscles that we cannot consciously control, such as the muscles in our stomach and blood vessels.

* Cardiac muscles: These are the muscles that make up our heart.

The main types of bones are:

* Long bones: These are the long, thin bones, such as the bones in our arms and legs.

* Short bones: These are the small, cube-shaped bones, such as the bones in our wrists and ankles.

* Flat bones: These are the flat, thin bones, such as the bones in our skull and ribs.

* Irregular bones: These are the bones that do not fit into any of the other categories, such as the vertebrae (the bones in our spine).
