How to Make a Heel Wedge

Heel wedges are support devices designed to alleviate heel, hip and back pain while walking or standing. Heel wedges correct supination and pronation by countering the angle of the ankle and knee. These wedges are inserted into footwear and can be transferred from shoe to shoe. Make heel wedges using a custom orthotic kit in your own home. These kits allow you to make the mold for the heel wedge, which is then sent back to you made out of materials ranging from specialized foam to carbon fiber.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your foot into the impression kit while seated. Keep your ankle and leg as straight as possible while bent at a 90-degree angle.

    • 2

Push into the mold, pressing from the knee without flexing your ankle. Ensure that you press past your arch into the foam. Don't press all the way to the base of the mold.

    • 3

Remove your foot. Ship the foot mold kit back to the manufacturer for heel wedge casting.

    • 4

Slide the wedge under your normal insole upon its return. Affix the wedge in place with double-sided tape to keep the wedges in place.
