How to Hold a Backpack While on Crutches
Leg and foot injuries often need several weeks of rest to allow them to heal. Crutches allow you to walk without bearing weight on your injured leg, transferring the load through your wrists. It is difficult to carry items with both arms occupied; however, a backpack can be used. The backpack will keep the load you are carrying over your center of gravity, decreasing your risk of falling. Follow simple steps to hold a backpack while you use your crutches.Instructions

1
Pack essential items in your backpack to minimize the amount of weight you are carrying. A heavy backpack puts extra strain on your back and shoulder muscles, and could affect your balance. Place heavier items like books toward the back of the backpack so they will be carried closest to your body.

2
Place both arms through the straps of your backpack. Using one arm only will shift the load to that side of your body and could cause you to lose your balance. Tighten the straps so the backpack is snug against your body.

Sit down before you put on or take off your backpack for better balance. While you are walking, lean slightly forward to compensate for the added weight on your back, particularly when you are climbing a flight of stairs.
