How-to Cures for Sprains in Necks

Neck sprains occur in the ligaments of your neck. These ligaments -- strong bands of connective tissue -- connect the vertebrae in your neck. A neck sprain can occur as the result of a fall, car accident or a sudden movement that causes the neck to move in an abnormal position. Neck sprains can be painful, lead to muscle spasms and cause weakness or numbness in the hands and arms. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, it takes four to six weeks for a neck sprain to heal. While you cannot cure a neck sprain, there are measures you can take to reduce your symptoms as you heal.

Visit with your physician. A visit to your doctor can help rule out fractures, disk herniation and other more serious conditions of the neck. Your doctor may provide you with a soft cervical collar to wear for support as your neck sprain heals.

Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. Aspirin or ibuprofen can help reduce pain and swelling in your neck.

    • 3

Apply ice to your neck. Ice can help to reduce inflammation, pain and discomfort. Apply ice for 15 to 30 minutes at a time, two to three times per day.

Ask your doctor about physical therapy. Massages, ultrasound treatment and light exercise can help to reduce your symptoms and promote healing.
