How to Use a Shoulder Sling

A shoulder sling is often used after injury or surgery to allow the arm to rest and remind you not to use it. Depending on the injury, a sling might be worn for a few days or several weeks. Slings are made in various sizes with adjustable-length straps --- one around the neck and one around the body --- to hold it in place. To maximize comfort, a sling needs to be worn properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the sling next to your injured arm. Wrap the shoulder strap of the sling around your back and up and over the front of the uninjured shoulder. Loop it through the D-ring attachment and loosely fasten the Velcro.

    • 2

Bend the elbow of the injured arm to a 90-degree angle. Use your other hand to guide the elbow into the sling until it rests comfortably in the back corner.

    • 3

Tighten the shoulder strap so that your injured arm is resting at a comfortable 90-degree angle at the elbow.

    • 4

Reach behind your back and bring the waist strap (if available) around the front and run it through its D-ring. Adjust the strap for a snug but comfortable fit.

    • 5

Fold a washcloth in half and tuck it under the shoulder strap where it is resting on your neck. This will make the strap more comfortable and keep it from rubbing the skin.
