How to Prepare for an Arthrogram

An arthrogram is a procedure that doctors use to evaluate how well a particular joint is functioning. The test incorporates x-ray technology, as well as injectable contrast medium, to allow the technician to see the structure of a joint, particularly the cartilage. Although there is nothing out of the ordinary that you need to do to prepare for an arthrogram, there are several things you should communicate to your doctor to ensure that the procedure goes smoothly.

Instructions

    • 1

Advise your doctor of any known allergies, particularly to iodine. It is also important to inform your doctor of any recent illnesses, injuries or surgeries.

    • 2

Ask your doctor to write you a prescription for a mild sedative medication, if you experience claustrophobia. Have this medication handy prior to the procedure in case the equipment for the arthrogram requires you to be in an enclosed space during imaging.

    • 3

Tell your doctor if you have a cochlear implant, an internal pacemaker or defibrillator, or if you have any type of clip -- such as those used to repair blood-vessel abnormalities -- implanted in your body. Use of magnetic resonance imaging is contraindicated in these cases.

    • 4

Inform your doctor or the radiology technician if there is any possibility that you may be pregnant, if you are a woman.

    • 5

Advise your doctor of any metal objects in your body resulting from an accident, such as a bullet or shrapnel.
