How to Make an IP Thumb Splint out of Aquaplast
Things You'll Need
- 10 cups water
- Large stockpot
- Kitchen shears
- Ruler
- 1 sheet Aquaplast
- Tweezers
Instructions

Preparation
-
1
Bring 10 cups of water to a boil in the large stockpot.
-
2
Using the ruler and the kitchen shears, cut a strip of Aquaplast 1/8 inch wide and approximately 4 1/2 inches long. If you find it difficult to cut the Aquaplast, submerge it in the hot water for 10 seconds to make it more pliable
-
3
Submerge the Aquaplast strip in the boiling water until it becomes clear. Once the strip turns completely clear, remove the pot of water from the heating element.
Molding the Splint
-
4
Remove the Aquaplast from the hot water with tweezers.
-
5
Have a helper create the splint or hold it in place as you create it .
-
6
Wrap the Aquaplast in a spiral formation around the thumb toward the tip of the finger starting at the base just below the IP joint and on the palm side of your hand. Finish wrapping on the underside of your thumb.
-
7
Hold the strip in place until it hardens and then check the fit and flexion. Trim the excess if the strip of Aquaplast was too long; make a new splint if the strip was too short or if it fits too loosely or too tightly.
