How to Strengthen a Torn Rotator Cuff

A torn rotator cuff typically takes several months to heal. During the healing process it is important to do stretching exercises to help rebuild the rotator cuff. Always do the stretching exercises slowly, and stop immediately if you feel extreme pain in your shoulder. Talk to your doctor about when to start these exercises, as you typically should not start conditioning your rotator cuff until at least 48 to 72 hours after surgery.

Position the shoulder near a heat lamp for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, two to three times a day. Heat helps create blood flow in the shoulder, which will help expedite the healing process.

    • 2

Stand up straight and clasp your hands together behind your back. Slowly move your arms upward, keeping them straight. When you cannot go any farther, hold this position for 15 to 20 seconds. Repeat this stretch three to four times a day.

Hold your arm out at a 90-degree angle. Hold the top of a broomstick in this hand and rest the length of the stick behind your elbow. Pull the broom slowly forward with your other hand until you cannot go any farther. Hold this pose for 15 to 20 seconds, then repeat it three to four times. Do this exercise daily.
