How to Apply Icy Hot

Whether you've pulled a muscle or tore a ligament, Icy Hot is an over-the-counter topical medication that soothes aches and pains. The medication contains menthol to provide a cooling and warming sensation, which stimulates your body's nerve receptors to dull pain. The medication is available as a patch, gel application and balm that provides little to no mess, according to the official Icy Hot site. While safe to use for minor muscle aches, it is always recommended to visit your physician if your pain continues after a few days of continuous use as it could be an indication of a severe problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the sore area with warm, soapy water and dry it thoroughly with a towel.

    • 2

Remove the gel applicator's cap, and gently squeeze the bottle while rubbing the sponge against the sore area to dispense the gel evenly over the skin. Place the cap back onto the tube when finished.

    • 3

Unscrew the balm's jar top, and scoop a quarter-sized amount of balm from the jar. Massage the balm directly onto your skin in a circular motion, and wash your hands with warm, soapy water to remove residue.

    • 4

Remove the medicated section on the patch, and place the patch onto the affected area. Remove the tape strips from either end of the patch to secure it onto your skin.

    • 5

Reapply the medication three to four times per day, every four hours to maintain relief.
