How to Perform a Transfer Using a Hoyer Lift
Before attempting to transfer someone using a Hoyer Lift, it is important to be confident of one's skill. Practice ahead of time to develop ease and confidence. A person who depends on this kind of help is vulnerable and requires assistance by someone who understands proper procedure and safety precautions. Some care facilities require that a Hoyer Lift be operated by two trained personnel: one to spot for difficulty or unanticipated movement by the patient, the other to operate the lift.Things You'll Need

1
Position the patient on the sling. Although there are a variety of cloth slings, they can all be positioned under the patient in a similar fashion. Gently roll the patient away from you. With the sling folded in half, lay it on the bed behind the patient's back. Roll the patient back in the first position, so that he is lying on the sling. Make sure that all parts of the sling are in the appropriate places.
-
2
Strap the patient in the lift sling. It is important to secure the patient in the sling so that he will not fall out. Double-check straps and secure appropriately. Talk to the patient about each step so that he is not taken by surprise.

3
Position the base of the lift under the bed and lock the legs in place. Lower the patient lift to meet the height of the patient. If necessary, raise the head of the bed and lower the bed rails. Secure the lift straps so that the patient is securely strapped in and ready to be moved.
-
4
Lift the patient using the lever on the Hoyer Lift. The brakes should be released at this point so that the weight of the patient will help it settle into the correct position. Face the patient toward you, and support the legs as they begin to dangle from the lifted position.

5
Grip the steering handles and steer the lift toward the wheelchair or other chair. Lower the bed if necessary for clearance. Gently and slowly lower patient over the chair or wheelchair.
