Scoliosis & Self-Correction

Scoliosis is a medical condition in which the spinal column is curved sideways into a distinctive "C" or "S" shape. Three to four children out of 1,000 suffer some form of scoliosis.
  1. Managing Scoliosis

    • Though scoliosis is an incurable condition, it can be managed and its effects halted or lessened through surgery, the use of a surgical brace or osteopathy. Forms of physical therapy are used by those who prefer a noninvasive approach to the condition.

    Self-Correction

    • Use of a physiotherapist or occupational therapist can be expensive; many sufferers prefer to self-correct their condition using exercises in posture training, such as yoga, Pilates, stretching and callanetics. Yoga positions that can be beneficial include the crocodile twist and the supine knee chest twist.

    Exercise Program

    • The aim of an exercise program for scoliosis is to strengthen the spine using such exercises as leg and arm extensions, back extensions, upright rows and one-arm rows. The use of a stability ball is recommended.
