Why Are Hamstrings Called Hamstrings?

Hamstrings refer to the group of muscles that allow the knee to flex and the hip to extend. These three muscles combined -- biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus --- are also known as the posterior femoral muscles or hamstrings.
