How to Use a Cane for Mobility

A cane can be an essential walking aid to people who are having issues maintaining balance or need helping moving. A cane can help the elderly, those with physical limitations or those who just underwent surgery get back to a more-active lifestyle much faster than going it alone. Using a cane properly can help you walk again on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the proper cane for your medical condition and physical needs. Choose between a single-tip cane or one with four tips on the bottom for additional support and stability. Select the type of handle that is must comfortable for you. Choose a hooked handle if you will be using your cane only occasionally and select a more padded handle grip if you have arthritic conditions in your wrists that require additional support. Ensure that the cane is of the proper height for you by making sure the top of the cane reaches your wrist.

Wear rubber-soled shoes that have good traction. Make sure shoes fit properly and are neither too big or too loose. Proper-fitting shoes will provide you with additional stability while using a cane.

    • 3

Clear a path for walking. Make sure the walking area in your home is clear of debris, which could cause you to trip or fall. Remove throw rugs, pillows and loose items and make sure that house pets are not in the way when you are walking with your cane. If you need assistance, ask a family member to help you remove these items, including those on the stairs.

    • 4

Hold the cane properly. Hold the cane on the opposite side of the injury or weak area. For example, if you had surgery on your left ankle, hold the cane on your right side. Use the cane to support your weight as you walk. Make sure that the weak leg hits the ground at the same time as the cane so the cane and your stronger side can absorb the impact and pressure to compensate for the weaker side.

Use your cane to assist you in sitting and standing. Shift some of your weight to the cane while sitting and standing. Always have your cane handy and within reach.
