Symptoms that Require an Orthopedic Surgeon
-
Pain
-
Pain is a common symptom of many orthopedic problems. Discomfort in specific joints can be an indication of problems that require surgery. Shoulder pain may indicate a rotator cuff problem while pain in wrist, arm or forearm may be a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome. Mild to severe pain in a finger accompanied by the finger being locked in a bent position may be a symptom of trigger finger. Pain after a trauma could be a sign of a broken bone or torn ligament. Back pain may require the expertise of an orthopedic surgeon. Examples of back problems that would require an orthopedic surgeon include herniated disk or fractured vertebrae. Problems with the spine may also trigger symptoms of numbness or tingling.
Swelling
-
Swelling can be a sign of a condition that may eventually need surgery. Osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage in your joints wears down. This can affect any joint, and tenderness and loss of flexibility may accompany it. Swelling or stiffness in your joints that last for more than two weeks could indicate osteoarthritis. Surgical treatment for this condition may include joint replacement, realigning bones or fusing bones. A physician should evaluate swelling of bones or joints, which can indicate other conditions including fractures or cancer.
Redness and Decreased Mobility
-
Redness can be a symptom of an infection or injury, particularly when accompanied by pain or swelling. Conditions such as bursitis or tendonitis may be accompanied by redness. Redness accompanied by pain, swelling or fever may indicate a serious problem and may require an orthopedic doctor. Decreased mobility is another sign of a musculoskeletal problem and may indicate conditions such as torn ligament or tendon injury.
Visible Injuries and Abnormalities
-
A visible injury to the musculoskeletal system may need orthopedic treatment. Examples of visible injuries include sprains, strains, broken bones and dislocations. Congenital abnormalities of the skeletal system may also require surgery, such as club foot, unequal leg length and hammer toes.
