How to Avoid Cauliflower Ear

"Cauliflower ear" is the term given to the condition in which the affected ear fills with fluid, separates from the ear cartilage and hardens into tissue. The ear takes on a deformed appearance that looks like a cauliflower plant, hence the name. Cauliflower ear often occurs in people who participate in wrestling, rugby or mixed martial arts. Any blunt trauma to the ear can cause this condition however, such as a fall. You can avoid this condition and save the appearance and health of your ears with some precautions.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid participating in activities where your ear is susceptible to strong blows. Do not participate in wrestling, mixed martial arts, or rugby as those sports have a high occurrence of cauliflower ear.

    • 2

Wear ear protection in the form of ear guards or helmets. If you must participate in sports where your ears are susceptible to injury, always wear protective headgear. This ensures that your ears are fully protected from damage.

    • 3

Visit a doctor immediately if you think that your ear has been damaged. As soon as your ear begins to swell or become painful, visit a doctor who may be able to treat the condition before it becomes irreversible.
