Benefits & Side Effects of HGH
The pituitary gland in the brain secretes HGH, or human growth hormone. Production of this hormone begins decreasing as people get into their 30s and it continues to decrease throughout the rest of their lives. This hormone is sometimes likened to the "fountain of youth" because of its reported effects on many bodily functions that contribute to a slowing of the aging process. As of October 2009, FDA-approved HGH could still be legally prescribed for certain conditions.-

HGH is probably best known for its ability to increase bone growth for children whose bones grow very slowly. Bone density is increased when the body has adequate levels of HGH. Connective tissue and muscles are rejuvenated and repaired with supplementation of this hormone. The Food and Drug Administration approved HGH for use when prescribed for certain conditions, including: hormonal imbalance causing shortness in children, long-term treatment of growth failure, treatment for Turner syndrome, adult short bowel syndrome, treatment of rare pituitary tumors and muscle wasting associated with HIV/AIDS.
Benefits
-
One doctor, Dr. Edward Lichten, administers HGH replacement therapy to patients with conditions approved for HGH treatment under FDA rules. His experience, and studies he cites, note some benefits.
Increased muscle mass and fat loss top the list benefits. Subjects also claim increased energy and reduced cravings for sugary foods and stimulants such as caffeine. There is reported improvement with memory, stronger libido, greater physical and mental well-being and improved self-image. Some people claim age spots have faded with only a few months of HGH supplementation. Wrinkled skin is reportedly reduced. Organ functions are revitalized. Other cited studies show osteoporosis reversal, increased cardiac function, improved sleep, improved mood, and lower levels of depression. There is evidence of faster hair growth. Lipodystrophy is a condition where there is abnormal fat distribution, or the absence of fat in people with this rare genetic disorder, or people with HIV. HGH has been shown to reduce these symptoms. There are also claims people with Down's syndrome have shown improvement in their condition.
Side Effects
-
Processes used to refine hormones into a form that people can consume can easily become contaminated. Since quality HGH can cost more than $100 per dose, there are counterfeiters who sell low-quality HGH or pass off other materials as HGH. High-dose HGH supplementation has been connected with fluid retention, carpal tunnel syndrome problems and hypertension. Smaller doses have been connected with minor side effects such as mild retention of fluid and some slight pain in the joints. Low-dose HGH supplementation studies have determined there are some side effects. The FDA lists increased cancer risk, nerve pain, and elevated cholesterol and glucose levels as possible side effects.
