Proper Height & Use of Canes

Canes can be a useful tool for people suffering from disabilities and/or injuries. Not only do they help in relieving strain on various body parts, they also help limit falls and further injuries. The height of the cane is an important factor when making a selection. Having a cane that is of proper height proportion will allow a more comfortable and safe handling experience. Medical professionals will help decide the correct height and type of cane that you should use.
  1. How High Should My Cane Be?

    • The general rule of thumb is that the cane should reach your wrist when standing erect and still, with your shoes on. Make sure that your elbow is flexed approximately 15 to 20 degrees when standing, and that your thumb and fingers do not overlap on the handle. This will allow the convenience of not having to bend over and put more pressure on your back. To help make sure your cane is the correct height, ask the customer service representative to help you measure, or talk with your doctor.

    Using a Cane

    • Using a cane is quite easy, and if done correctly, can help alleviate strain on various parts of your body. It is important to identify the cane's safety. Many canes come with rubber stoppers on the bottom. Make sure your cane's stopper is on securely to help prevent any slips or falls. When using the cane, hold it in the hand that is opposite to the injury and/or strain. For example, if you have a pain in your right leg, you will hold the cane in your left hand. When walking with the cane, shift weight as needed to help alleviate the pressure or strain.

    Other Things to Remember

    • Make sure the cane is lightweight. This will allow more comfort when walking, as the cane will not be an extra burden. If you plan on wearing different size shoes, get a cane that has an adjustable height feature. Making sure the cane is of the correct height each time you use it is an important safety factor.
