Non-Arthritic Causes of Joint Pain

Joint pain can affect one or more joints such as the elbow or knee. A common cause of joint pain is arthritis. However, some non-arthritic causes may include rheumatic fever, sickle cell anemia, bone cancer, influenza and sarcoidosis.
  1. Rheumatic Fever

    • Rheumatic fever is an immune disease which may occur after a streptococcus bacterial infection in children. Rheumatic fever treatments may involve bed rest, anti-inflammatory medications and pain relievers.

    Sickle Cell Anemia

    • Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disease in which the red blood cells are sickle-shaped like a C. Treatment goals include treating complications with pain-relief medications and fluids.

    Bone Cancer

    • Bone cancer may have symptoms ranging from mild tenderness near the affected area to intense pain. Treatments include radiation, chemotherapy or surgery.

    Influenza

    • Influenza (flu) is a contagious viral infection which may be spread via sneezing and coughing. A flu vaccine can be given for prevention. Home treatments may include warm compresses, hot fluids and rest.

    Sarcoidosis
