What to Expect From Neck Surgery

Neck surgery may be performed to relieve pain and improve function of the neck. This type of surgery is usually highly successful for long-term pain relief. Most patients recovery quickly and have immediate pain relief.
  1. Hospital Stay

    • Most doctors require a 1- or 2-day hospital stay after neck surgery. This may vary according to what procedure is performed and the preference of the surgeon. Throat soreness and difficulty swallowing is common, so a diet of soft or liquid foods is advised for the first few days following surgery.

    The Incision

    • The incision that the doctor makes during surgery is usually sealed within 3 days, and patients may shower or bathe. In most cases, the sutures are under the skin and will not need to be removed. There may be some redness at the incision site for a few months, but this will become less noticeable over time.

    Pain Relief

    • Narcotic pain relievers may be prescribed after neck surgery to help reduce and control pain. This type of medication is usually used for the first 2 weeks following surgery. After that, over-the-counter medicines are used when necessary.

    Physical Therapy

    • Some patients who have neck surgery will progress well on their own. Patients who plateau at a certain point in the recovery process may benefit from physical therapy. This is most often prescribed for 3 visits a week for one month.

    Considerations

    • The recovery process is different for everyone, however, most people will notice a reduction in neck pain within a few days following surgery. Surgery is recommended after other non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, medications and cervical traction have failed to relieve pain.
