1
Avoid activities that require you to move your wrist from side to side. Lift your hand and move it to the out-of-reach keys when typing, for example, instead of turning your wrist. Also, use your other hand when you need to move your thumb in a pinching motion. Avoid moving your thumb across your hand, which irritates the tendon.
-
2
Use a splint or brace, as directed by your orthopedist or health-care provider, to help keep your thumb and wrist stationary. Wear the splint or brace when you are taking part in typing and other repetitive-motion activities. Try to keep your wrist and thumb straight to allow the tendon to rest.

3
Apply a heating pad and ice pack to the affected area every two hours. Alternate between hot and cold, but do not leave either treatment on for more than 20 minutes at a time.
-
4
Take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as Advil or Aleve) as recommended by your health-care provider to reduce swelling and provide pain relief.
-
5
Attend all prescribed appointments with a physical or occupational therapist, and complete any at-home exercises advised by your therapist or orthopedist.
-
6
If the pain persists, consult your health-care provider about cortisone injections that can help relieve the pain and inflammation.
