Shin Pain Relief
One of the most important parts of our legs is the shins. Shins help support our legs and they tend to bear the most weight because of how low they are on the body. As a result, our shins are often in pain. Fortunately, getting relief is simple.-
Warm Ups and Resting
-
Your shins are at the front of your legs and they bear much of the weight during exercise and movement. As a result, your shins may be in great pain after exercise. To avoid this, try warming up before exercise. Stretching exercises can help prevent the pain that comes from overexertion. Lift your leg in the air and rotate your foot in a wide circle to work your ankle and shins. Stretch your shins by touching your toes. This will help loosen your muscles. However, if your shins are in pain after exercise, get off your feet and relax by lying down on a couch and taking a break. Gauge your resting period on how your shins feel. Rest as long as the pain is prominent.
Footwear
-
Wearing the right kind of shoes for your activity can also help you avoid shin pain. If you will be running, or doing any other strenuous activity, wear exercise shoes. Walking shoes are generally a good all-purpose shoe. If you are prone to shin pain, buy some kind of insole treatment. These treatments are incredibly easy to use. Simply slip them inside your shoe and they will help support your foot. Many people with extra-tall arches don't get proper foot support and these insole treatments can help avoid shin pain before it starts. These can be found in most shoe stores and online at many orthopedic websites.
Working Your Shins
-
Working your shins can help avoid the pain that comes from overused shins by building their strength. Work on flexibility and strength. Start by sitting in a chair with your feet flat on the ground. Slowly raise your right toes toward your shins. Lift until you feel some discomfort. Hold for five seconds. Lower back to the ground and hold for five. Repeat this exercise 10 times and then repeat it 10 times with the other foot. In the same position, lift your right toes into the air again. This time, draw the letter J in the air and return it to the ground, repeating 10 times for each foot. Now work on your shin strength. Sit up in a chair and breathe deeply. Extend your right leg and with an ankle weight on your foot. Only put as much weight on your ankle as you feel comfortable. Lift your leg a few inches off the ground and hold for 10 seconds. Carefully lower to the ground and repeat 10 times with each foot.
