Treatment Success for Achilles Tendonitis
The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscle to the heal of the foot. When the tendon becomes irritated or inflamed it is referred to as Achilles tendonitis. Typically, with rest the inflammation of the tendon will resolve itself. However, when rest fails to relieve the pain associated with Achilles tendonitis, more advanced medical treatment may be required.-
Early Treatment
-
The first treatment prescribed for Achilles tendonitis is generally rest, packing ice around the ankle and anti-inflammatory medication.
Shoe Inserts
-
If initial self-treatment is unsuccessful, your doctor may prescribe shoe inserts that may assist in relieving the pressure on the Achilles tendon.
Walking Boot
-
In more severe cases of Achilles tendonitis, a special walking boot and crutches may be prescribed in order to remove the strain on the Achilles tendon while walking.
Physical Therapy
-
In some cases, physical therapy may help relieve the pain association with Achilles tendonitis.
Surgery
-
If non-surgical measures are unsuccessful, surgical removal of the surrounding tissue may be required.
