What Can Cause Numbness in Ankle & Foot?

According to the University of Michigan Health System, many conditions can affect the nerves of the foot and ankle, causing numbness and other symptoms.
  1. Morton's Neuroma

    • A growth around the nerves, called a Morton's neuroma, can cause pain, burning, tingling or numbness between your toes, especially between the third and fourth toes, and in the ball of your foot.

    Pinched Nerve

    • A pinched nerve in your back (such as one caused by a herniated disc) or buttocks can cause pain down the leg and into the foot. A pinched nerve in your ankle (tarsal tunnel syndrome) can also cause numbness.

    Poor Circulation

    • People with poor circulation, especially those with diabetes or peripheral arterial disease, often have burning, numbness or lack of feeling in their feet.

    Neurological Disease

    • Neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease or cerebral palsy can cause ankle and foot numbness.

    Other Causes

    • Other possible causes of numbness in the ankle and foot are leg and foot deformities, spinal problems and shoe laces tied too tight.
