Different Kinds of Leg Braces

Leg braces come in a variety of sizes and types. StandProud, an organization that helps disabled Africans, lists braces that include the lower leg, full leg, hip area and chest area.
  1. Below the Knee

    • A short brace that attaches to the lower leg can help people with weak ankles or feet walk more easily and with less of an incorrect “rolling” motion.

    Full Leg

    • A full-leg brace supports a knee that cannot hold weight properly. Users of this type of brace may or may not need a cane when walking.

    Above the Hip

    • A brace that extends above the hip can keep the leg in proper alignment for people with hip weakness.

    Full Brace with Corset

    • A brace that supports the body up to the chest, with the aid of a leather corset that fits around the upper body, can support people who suffer from weakness extending up into the back muscles.

    Considerations

    • While plastic braces weigh less and fit more neatly inside clothing than metal braces, their greater tendency to break can pose a danger to the user, especially if the breakage creates sharp, exposed edges, according to StandProud.
