AC Joint Separation Treatment

There are three classifications of an acromioclavicular, or AC joint, shoulder separation. Grade 1 injuries involve mild ligament tears while grade 3 injuries involve complete tears in multiple ligaments. Because of the pain, treatments center around rest, immobilization, ice and medication.
  1. Significance

    • One should receive immediate medical treatment after an AC joint injury to avoid further tears in surrounding ligaments. Immobilization and rest are the foremost treatments. Except for in some mild separations, most people wear a sling to limit movement.

    Types of Treatment

    • Anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, can be highly effective in relieving pain and inflammation in the shoulder. Acetaminophen can be used to control pain. Muscle relaxants can help control spasms.

    Other Types of Treatment

    • Ice can help reduce the initial inflammation and pain. Ice is most effective if used within the first 48 to 72 hours of an injury. Ice reduces inflammation and pain by minimizing blood flow, which is called vasoconstriction. Ice packs should used for 15 to 20 minutes every three or four hours.

    Effects of Exercise

    • After the ligaments heal, exercise can help a person gain mobility in his shoulder area. Stretching and strength-building exercises will help add stability to the AC joint.

    Time Frame

    • Recovery from an AC joint separation is contingent upon the severity and magnitude of treatment. Those will grade 3 injuries will generally need more time to heal.
