Leg Bursitis Treatment

Leg bursitis occurs at the hip (trochanter) when bursa sacs between bone and cartilage become irritated and inflamed. This usually causes pain in the hip and outer thigh. The best treatment for this condition includes a combination of rest, immobilization, medication, ice, heat and exercise.
  1. Significance

    • Seek immediate treatment for trochanteric bursitis. If you allow the injury to linger, it can lead to a degeneration of the cartilage or arthritis. You may also tear tendons in the ball and socket region of the hip.

    Rest and Medication

    • Rest is the most important treatment for trochanteric bursitis. The bursitis will not heal without rest. During this time, a hip flexor brace can be used to prevent further injury. Taking an anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen, is also important to reduce inflammation and pain.

    Ice and Heat

    • Applying ice during the first two or three days will help to reduce the initial swelling and inflammation. Place an ice pack directly against the source of pain. After a few days, applying a heating pad can increase blood flow, which will bring oxygen and nutrients for healing.

    Effects of Exercise

    • When inflammation is under control, certain stretching exercises can increase flexibility in the legs and hips. This will help the leg become accustomed to certain movements again. Strength-building exercises can increase the stability in the upper thighs and hip joint.

    Time Frame

    • No set time frame exists for overcoming leg or trocanteric bursitis. Recovery is contingent upon the severity of the injury and the use of available treatments.
