Knee Swelling Treatment

Knee pain and swelling are caused by some level of trauma to the knee. It could be anything from a simple twist to a major injury requiring medical intervention. The home treatments are all the same, including four basic steps. Sometimes over-the-counter medications can help. If the injury isn't serious, a trip to the doctor may be avoided.
  1. Rest

    • Taking a break from the activity will keep from aggravating the injury. If you can't stop and rest, change activities to minimize aggravation. Extend the leg, and put a small pillow underneath the knee to keep it slightly bent.

    Ice

    • The sooner you get cold onto the knee, the sooner it can work on controlling the swelling. At home if you don't have a cold pack, use a bag of frozen peas or cut corn. Their smaller size helps to conform to your knee for better contact. Ten to 20 minutes, three times a day, will help to control swelling. Conversely, avoid hot baths or showers.

    Compression

    • Gentle compression will help to minimize swelling. Wrap an elastic bandage snugly around the knee. Wrapping it around the ice pack keeps the pack in place to maximize the effect of both. If you start to get numbness or tingling below the bandage, it is too tight.

    Elevation

    • Any time you are sitting or lying down, elevate the knee. If possible, get the knee above the level of your heart. The elevation will help fluids drain away from the knee. A recliner is a good way to do this. Supporting the whole leg, not just the knee, will make elevation more comfortable.

    Over-the-Counter Medications

    • Over-the-counter medications can help reduce pain and swelling. Acetaminophen can be used immediately. Aspirin and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen shouldn't be taken for 24 hours since they may slow clotting and increase the severity of any bruising that may occur.

    Physical Aids

    • If you are limping, use a cane or crutches to help support yourself and take strain off the knee. A compression wrap or sleeve, available at your local pharmacy, can be used to help stabilize the knee during normal day-to-day activities, minimizing any aggravation to the injury.
