How to Sleep With a Herniated Disc
A herniated disc is a painful condition in which the disc between two vertebrae is damaged or impinged. This reduction in cushioning and the displaced fluid or bulge can place pressure on the spine and nerves, leading to postural adjustments, pain and disability. Most herniated discs will heal over 6 to 8 weeks on their own and not require surgery. Even if you know your condition will alleviate itself, finding a comfortable position to sleep in can be challenging.Things You'll Need

1
Sleep on a firm mattress that provides support to your back. While lying on a soft mattress may feel good at first, once you begin to move (or get up), you will realize the strain placed on your body by every movement. Stick with firm.
-
2
Sleep with a pillow under your knees if you sleep on your back, or sleep using a body pillow if you sleep on your side. The body pillow supports the length of your body and allows your knees to straddle the pillow to correctly align your spine reduce strain.
-
3
Avoid sleeping on your stomach. This will put additional strain on your back and cause more pain and stiffness.
-
4
Take pain medication prior to bed. Depending on the severity of your herniated disc, you may be using over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or stronger prescription narcotics to reduce swelling and pain. Take as directed.
