What Are the Treatments for Strained Back Ligaments?

Ligaments are fibrous tissue that keep two bones connected. Treatment of ligament injuries can be complicated because they require a significant amount of blood flowing to the affected area.
  1. Light Movement

    • Although the movement of the ligaments should be reduced when there is an injury, light movement and stretching helps the ligaments recover faster. Laying in bed actually slows down the healing process. Before starting to stretch or do exercises, consult your doctor.

    Medications

    • Medicine, such as ibuprofen, can be used to reduce swelling around the affected area. If you think you need a stronger medication, consult your doctor.

    Ice

    • Ice will reduce the swelling and acts as a pain reliever. You can follow the RICE treatment, which consists of rest, ice, compression and elevation.

    Heat Therapy

    • Heat will increase the blood flow to the ligaments, which is essential for them to heal. Heat also relaxes the back muscle, relieving some pressure on the ligaments.

    Drink Water

    • Water will help keep the bloodstream pure from acidic byproducts, due to muscle usage. This relaxes the muscle, which inherently relaxes the ligaments.
