Frozen shoulder is a process that involves the thickening and contracture of your capsule, which surrounds your shoulder joint, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
Risks

If your shoulder has been in a sling for several weeks and immobilized for a long period of time, you are at risk for developing a frozen shoulder. Other risk factors include diabetes, Parkinson's disease, hypothyroidism, surgery or heart disease.
Symptoms

Symptoms include pain, stiffness and limited range of motion in your shoulder.
Considerations

Treatment for your frozen shoulder can involve corticosteroid injections, stretching exercises or, in severe cases, surgery. Stretching exercises can also be used to prevent frozen shoulder after a shoulder injury.
