1
Rest the ankle tendon. Rest is the most essential aspect of successfully caring for an ankle injury. Do not take part in athletic activities until the ankle tendon has regained full strength. Keep off the ankle for the first 48 hours after the injury.
-
2
Ice the tendon. Icing the tendon for 15 minutes per hour for the first day and 15 minutes every 2-3 hours for the following days will reduce swelling. By reducing swelling, the ankle can heal more effectively and quickly.
-
3
Elevate the ankle tendon. Try to keep the ankle elevated above the level of the heart. To ensure that the ankle remains elevated during the night, prop the ankle up using pillows or other elevating materials.
-
4
Take an anti-inflammatory medication. Aspirin or Ibuprofen are two over-the-counter drugs that work well in reducing pain, inflammation of the tendon, and swelling. The anti-inflammatory will also allow for easier blood circulation.
-
5
Ease back into activity. Stretch the ankle tendon well before exercising or participating in sports. Your doctor can provide you with strengthening exercises to avoid further injury or re-aggravation.
