Relief Measures for Leg & Feet Pain

Leg and foot pain can be very aggravating, especially with other symptoms like cramping, fatigue and swelling that usually occur with it. Leg and foot pain can range from many different causes such as dehydration, muscle fatigue or strain from overuse, too much physical activity or exercise. Holding a muscle in the same position for a long time can also be the culprit. Many other injuries can cause leg and foot pain as well.
  1. Pain Management

    • If you are suffering from extreme leg and foot pain, you should consult a physician to determine its cause and so that you can receive proper assessment and care. For a more conservative treatment, there are relief measures that you can follow for pain management.

If you are an active athlete, you should reduce your workout activity until the problem improves. Check your shoes and replace them it they are already worn out. You need supportive shoes to prevent injuries and additional strain to your foot and leg.

Rest and elevate your leg and foot as much as possible. Apply ice to reduce the pain and swelling immediately after an activity that aggravated your pain. Hold the ice for up to 15 minutes for as many times as you feel necessary throughout the day.

To relieve pain and remedy your cramping muscles, you can gently stretch and massage the affected area. Stretching will improve your circulation by increasing the blood flow to your strained muscles. Improved circulation in your leg and foot can help speed up its recovery. In addition, stretching can also relieve your tense muscles.

You can also take over-the-counter medicine such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to manage the pain.

    Prevention

    • To avoid further strain on your foot and leg muscles, wear comfortable and properly fitting shoes. Avoid old, ill-fitting shoes, narrow-toed shoes and high heels. Always warm up and cool down before and after each exercise. Do not forget to stretch. To prevent nerve damage (leg pains are sometimes caused by nerve disorders) do not smoke and limit your alcohol intake.
