Remedies for Leg Swelling

You may experience leg swelling for any number of reasons. Excess weight, standing for long periods of time, water retention and certain medications can cause your legs to swell, a condition known as edema. If you experience leg swelling, a few options may help you reduce and prevent the swelling without going to a doctor. However, if the swelling persists, or if it is accompanied by any other symptom, it may be best to see a doctor.
  1. Elevation and Ice Application

    • Leg swelling is most often treated by elevation and ice application. To properly elevate your legs to get the swelling to go down, place some pillows beneath your legs to the point that your legs become elevated above your heart. By elevating your legs to this point, the blood that may be pooling in your legs has a chance to move out of your legs more easily. While elevating your legs, apply ice packs to them to soothe sore muscles and curb the swelling. If necessary, compress the swelling with bandages.

    Exercise

    • Do not stand up without moving for long periods of time. If you must for your job or other reasons, exercise your legs so there is less of a chance of blood pooling in your legs and swelling to follow. Walk in place when you can and purchase support stockings or socks that can help with circulation. Keeping your legs moving should reduce and eliminate swelling associated with standing in place. You may also need to purchase shoes with better cushioning to support you as you stand.

    Hydration

    • Another key element in swelling reduction is proper hydration. Drink water throughout the day. Cutting out excess salt in your diet will also help with swelling in your legs. Stay away from salty foods until the swelling clears up. If you have leg swelling due to a bug bite or sting, taking an over-the-counter antihistamine is advisable. You may also apply an antihistamine cream to the affected area. The swelling should go down as the antihistamine runs its course.
