Hammertoes Definition
Hammertoe is the term given to a toe that is permanently bent or curved at the middle joint. While not life-threatening, hammertoes have the potential to cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms and usually require treatment.-
Causes
-
Hammertoes are often caused by wearing shoes that are too tight or have high heels. Some people have an inherited susceptibility to hammertoes, which makes it possible for them to develop no matter what type of footwear is worn. Other possible causes include diabetic neuropathy, an injury, arthritis and stroke.
Symptoms
-
Symptoms of a hammertoe include pain; difficulty moving your toe; redness and swelling around the middle joint of your toe; the appearance of calluses or hard spots at the joint or on the tip of your toe; and difficulty walking.
Time Frame
-
Hammertoes develop over time. When they first begin your toe will still be flexible, but without treatment it will become rigid and fixed in the hammer position.
Treatment
-
Surgery is the most common treatment for hammertoes and can involve releasing the tendon or band of tissue that is causing the toe to curl, or removing parts of the bone. Wearing an insole or orthotic shoes helps prevent hammertoes from becoming worse.
Prevention
-
Selecting shoes with adequate toe room and low heels helps prevent hammertoes. Additionally, laced shoes often provide more room for your toes. Avoid shoes made of vinyl or plastic, which allow less breathability and can cause sweating, contributing to the formation of hammertoes.
