Cold Packs for Neck Pain
The causes of neck pain may range from simple muscle strain to having suffered a mild injury. One method for reducing neck pain is to use cold packs. Applying a cold pack may provide patients with immediate pain relief, while avoiding prescription medications or costly medical treatments.-
Benefits
-
Ice packs can help reduce the swelling and inflammation that may be responsible for neck pain. The packs can be used as self-treatment when combined with neck massages and several days of no physical activity.
Types
-
Reusable cold packs may be purchased for neck pain. Or, substitute a traditional cold pack with a damp towel that has been in a plastic bag in the freezer for 15 minutes or with a bag of frozen vegetables.
Time Frame
-
Apply a cold pack to the neck 3 times a day for 15 minutes with a cloth placed between your neck and the cold pack. Patients may find pain relief after using a frozen pack for 2 to 3 days. If the pain continues, however, it may be advisable to speak with a physician.
Prevention/Solution
-
Neck pain not resulting from an injury may be reduced with lifestyle changes. Basic lifestyle changes include practicing good posture at work, walking with a straight back, and using a telephone headset.
Warning
-
Patients should seek medical care with sharp neck pain, radiating arm pain, or pain that continues after self-care treatments. Physicians may order laboratory work and imaging tests to confirm the cause of neck pain.
