Joint Stiffness Remedies
Joint stiffness can be a sign or symptom of many diseases, as well as a consequence of aging. Understand how to deal with and remedy some of the pain and stiffness associated with this heath issue.-
Stretching
-
Stretching and other mild, range-of-motion activities that gently stretch the joint can be helpful. For example, if your elbows are stiff, without forcing the joint, bend and extend your arm to try to exercise the joint. For knees or ankles, do this from a sitting position to limit the stress on the joint.
Exercise
-
Light exercise can be good for joint pain, particularly if there are several joints involved. Walking or other light exercise will help loosen and relax the joints and relieve some of the joint stiffness. Swimming and aquatic exercises are particularly good for this--the water protects the joints from unnecessary stress.
Compresses
-
Depending on the nature of the stiffness, hot and cold compresses may also be effective. If the stiffness is accompanied by pain and swelling, such as a sprain, cold compresses will be most effective. Hot compresses are better for most joint stiffness, increasing blood flow to the area. Avoid placing a hot pad directly on the skin; instead, cover it with a thin towel or other material to prevent accidental burns.
Precautions
-
If your stiffness lasts for more than a week and exercise or other therapeutic remedies don't seem to help, schedule an appointment to see your doctor--this could be symptomatic of a more serious condition.
