How to Strengthen Tendons

The tendons attach muscles to bones. Injuries and overuse can damage the tendons and cause pain and inflammation. You can do several things to strengthen them in order to minimize your risk of tendon injuries and maximize performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider professional lessons or instructions to learn proper techniques for any sports or activities you engage in. Learning proper movements, positioning and use of equipment can strengthen the tendons and muscles that are involved in the activity.

    • 2

Properly prepare yourself for activities and sports you take part in. Do exercises that strengthen relevant parts of the body. If you are unsure of how to proceed, consult your coach, a sports medicine doctor or a professional trained in exercise and fitness. They can recommend appropriate exercises.

    • 3

Stretch at least a few minutes before and after exercise or sporting events. This encourages optimal range of motion, strengthens the tendons and lessens the impact of repetitive motion.

    • 4

Get adequate rest between exercise sessions or games. Giving your tendons and muscles time to recover between bouts of activity makes them stronger. The appropriate rest time can vary depending on the activity. A coach or fitness trainer can recommend a schedule.
