These three specific muscles are the biceps femoris, semitendinosus and semimembranosus, which together serve as the the flexor muscles for the knee. These muscles can be damaged, and injuries are especially common among athletes who participate in sports that require sudden acceleration or deceleration or sports involving a lot of running.
