Osteonecrosis of the Jaw Symptoms

Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a dental condition that occurs most often after dental surgery, but may also occur as a side effect of taking medication to treat osteoporosis or cancer. The National Osteoporosis Foundation states that people who take bisphosphonate drugs have a high risk of developing osteonecrosis of the jaw, which can be very painful.
  1. Pain

    • People who suffer from osteonecrosis of the jaw may have jaw or gum pain, or both, according to the American Dental Association. Swelling of the gums may accompany the pain.

    Prolonged Infection

    • Symptoms of osteonecrosis of the jaw may include gum infections that are frequent and prolonged, seemingly without healing.

    Jaw Numbness

    • The jaw bone may become numb of feel heavy if osteonecrosis has developed. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, the lower jaw is more commonly affected than the upper jaw bone.

    Teeth and Bone Problems

    • A person with osteonecrosis may experience loose teeth and have parts of the jaw bone that are exposed.

    Drainage

    • Wounds in the gums or areas of the exposed jawbone may drain as complications of osteonecrosis.
