Bell's Palsy Pain

Bell's Palsy is characterized by paralysis of the facial muscles on one side and is usually the result of a viral infection. It occurs when the nerve that regulates the facial muscles becomes swollen and compressed. Most people start getting better within a few weeks and recover fully within three to six months. A small number might experience a recurrence on the opposite side of the face or experience symptoms for life. As it affects a nerve, Bell's Palsy can cause pain and discomfort. Treatments aim to hasten the healing process and ease pain.
  1. Medication

    • Common medications to treat Bell's Palsy include corticosteroids and antivirals. Corticosteroids like prednisone reduce swelling in the facial nerve, which alleviates pain and helps the nerve fit more comfortably in the bony area that surrounds it. Antiviral drugs like acyclovir or valacyclovir stop the progression of the virus, speeding up healing and reducing symptoms.

You can also relieve pain on your own by using over-the-counter pain relievers like Advil or Motrin.

    Physical Therapy

    • Massaging and stretching the facial muscles can relieve pain and discomfort. A physical therapist can show you appropriate techniques. Applying moist heat can also ease pain.

Massage and stretching are also important to prevent permanent contractures, which result when paralyzed muscles shrink and shorten. This can be disfiguring.

    Surgery

    • Surgically opening the bony passage that houses the facial nerve can relieve pressure on the nerve but can be controversial. For this reason, it is rarely recommended.

    Alternative Therapy

    • None of these treatments has been studied specifically for this condition but might relieve the pain associated with Bell's Palsy. Always seek out licensed practitioners. Acupuncture can reduce swelling and inflammation, which will reduce pain. Researchers believe acupuncture helps release endorphins, the body's natural pain killers. Acupressure involves pressing on particular points of the body with the fingers or hands; traditional Chinese medicine believes these certain points are energy pathways that promote healing when properly manipulated. You can visit a qualified practitioner or do them on your own at home.

    Other Suggestions

    • Stress reduction and relaxation can also help ease the pain. Things like meditation and deep breathing can calm the mind and body, lessening the sensations of pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, certain supplements might help heal the condition and deal with symptoms; they include vitamins B12 and B6 as well as zinc. Discuss appropriate dosages with your doctor.
