Medicine for Joint Pains

The Mayo Clinic recommends that you take anti-inflammatory medications for joint pain. These medicines, which fall into the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) category, include ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), aspirin and naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn). However, if you take NSAIDs on a long-term basis, they can have side effects, especially if you are taking more than you should.
  1. NSAIDs

    • NSAIDs reduce inflammation, muscles spasms and pain. If NSAIDs aren't effective, your physician may prescribe muscle relaxants or pain medicines, which have side effects, such as sleepiness, nausea and headaches. Side effects of ibuprofen include nausea, ulcers or an upset stomach. This medicine may cause intestinal and stomach bleeding.

    Opiates

    • Opiates have been used for centuries to reduce pain; however, they are highly addictive. Examples of opiates are Oxycontin and Vicodin. While effective, they can be deadly while drinking alcohol.

    Cortisone and Steroids

    • Other available options include cortisone and steroids, both of which can have serious adverse effects. Cortisone can be injected directly into the painful area; however, cortisone can have bad results on those who are suffering from manic depression or those who are bipolar. Steroids can eliminate pain, but they also reduce your body's natural immunity. This makes you susceptible to illness and infection.

    Glucosamine

    • Glucosamine is effective in treating joint pain. This is a natural dietary supplement, which can be purchased without a prescription. Glucosamine reduces joint damage and maintains the integrity and flexibility of cartilage, which cushions the joints.

    Rhizotomy

    • Radiofrequency rhizotomy, a surgical treatment, may improve mobility and reduce pain, according to The Cleveland Clinic. This procedure surgically denerves the facet joint. This approach is also called radiofrequency neurotomy. An electric current destroys nerves, which gives you pain relief.
