Supination Injuries

Oversupination, known as "hyper-supination," causes many kinds of foot and hand and bone joint problems. Oversupination can also cause damages to the muscles and tendons connected to the joint bone structures. Oversupination problems and injuries mostly result from over-use factors generally common with active athletes.
  1. Identification

    • Supination is a term used to describe movements of the hands and feet associated with walking or running. Normal supination is good for the body, however, oversupination can cause bone joint problems. The supination action of the foot, for instance, is needed to help provide some level of leverage, which helps the body move forward when walking or running. At times, the level of supination becomes excessive, and can lead to foot or ankle injuries.

    Torn Ligaments

    • Excessive supination can lead to torn ligaments in the body. Ligaments are fibers which hold bones together and control range of motions in joint areas. One of the common problems of excessive supination is that it can cause tears on the joint ligaments of the foot and elbows. Ligaments provide support and cushion for bones enabling them to stay in position. Ligaments are responsible for keeping bones in their structures. For instance, ligaments prevent the human hand from bending backwards.

    Weakness of the Joints

    • Excessive supination can cause joint weakness. When people exercise, stretching helps to increase the flexibility of their muscles. This process allows bone joints to slightly move farther. For instance, stretching exercises enable martial artists to carry out many maneuvers, which may be an impossible task for most of us. Excessive supination of the ligaments would weaken the bone joints.

    Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury (ACL)

    • Knee injury is a common problem for athletes. The ACL is essential for running or walking. Excessive supination could cause injuries and damage the ACL. The ACL is located in the center of the knee; any damages on the ACL could mean an end to an athlete's career. This ligament helps the knee in its rotation and humans in walking and running. To help reduce supination injuries to the ACL, foot doctors always recommend good running shoes and cushioned support for the foot

    Tendon Injuries

    • Supination injuries could also lead to tendon damage and tears. Tendons connect bones and muscles. Without the tendons, the body would not be able to move. Tendons are made up of special tenocyte cells, water and collagen fibers. Millions of these fibers are woven together to form the tendons. They form tough connections between the muscles and the bones. Supination injuries could lead to bad tendons.
