Shoulder & Neck Pain Relief

There are many different types of pain you can experience in your shoulder or neck. It could be a sharp or burning pain, or an ache. The type of pain depends on the type of injury. Most of these pains do not require a doctor. You can get relief right in the comfort of your own home.
  1. Ice

    • Do not underestimate the power of ice to heal your neck and shoulder. If you have an ice pack, you can place it directly on the source of the pain. It will work to numb the area and reduce the amount of pain you feel, and it will reduce any swelling. Keep the ice on your neck and shoulder for 20 minutes, then keep it off for 20 minutes. You can do this for the first two or three days after you started feeling the pain.

Also, if you can't stand to have ice directly on your neck or shoulder, wrap it in a towel first.

    Rest and Pain Relievers

    • During the first few days after you notice the neck and shoulder pain, you should be resting; you don't want to aggravate the injury. You may also need to take a pain reliever to ease the pain and reduce swelling. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be alternated to combat your symptoms. Take an ibuprofen every six to eight hours, then two acetaminophen tablets every four hours. If the pain is too intense for this schedule, you may need to see your doctor.

    Elevation

    • A simple way to relieve your pain is to prop yourself up with pillows. Just place two or three extra pillows behind you on your bed or couch. This brings your neck and shoulders above your heart. It will help reduce swelling, which relieves pain.
