Relief From Charley Horses
A charley horse is the common name for a muscle spasm. Spasms can occur in any muscle and can last from a few seconds to 15 minutes. When a muscle is in spasm, it contracts uncontrollably. It is common for spasms to occur repeatedly in the same muscle before subsiding.-
Treatment

The immediate treatment of a charley horse is to stop activity, stretch and massage the affected muscle. Apply a heat pad to the affected muscle in an effort to relax the spasm. Ice also can be used after the initial spasm and after the pain has subsided. Increase your fluid intake by drinking more water. Sports drinks are also recommended as they contain potassium and calcium. Drink orange juice or eat a banana for an extra boost of potassium. If the muscle remains sore, use an over the counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication for help easing the pain. If the charley horses become severe, seek medical attention from a health care provider.
Exercises to Relieve Spasms

Try the following stretching exercises to relieve a charley horse. Grab the muscle with one hand and slowly pull back on the toes with the other. Slowly move the toes up and down to try and relieve cramping muscle. Walk around slowly on the ball of the heel to stretch out and give relief to the muscles.
