Treatments for Heel Spurs
A heel spur occurs when a growth of calcium forms around the tendons and ligaments on the heel bone. This can be diagnosed by an x-ray. It is a painful condition, but thankfully there are treatments to relieve the discomfort.-
Rest
-
Rest the foot and keep it elevated. Curtailed as much activity as possible until the pain subsides.
Heat
-
Administer heat to the inflamed area. This dilates blood vessels and eases the inflammation and pain.
Heel Cups and Orthodics
-
Heel cups and orthodics elevate the heel, which relieves some of the pressure and reduces pain. They also alter the way the foot hits the ground. Tape can also be used to pad the heel.
Anti-Inflammatory Medications
-
Aspirin, NSAID prescriptions and steroid injections are often effective in treating heel spurs. Although they help relieve pain, they do not always address the underlying cause of the condition.
Massage
-
Massage and apply ultrasound to the painful area. Over-the-counter creams for joint pain are also recommended.
Surgery
-
As a last resort, surgery is an option. New procedures have been implemented, but risks still remain, including nerve damage and fallen arches.
