Hip Bursitis Uncommon Symptoms
A bursa sac supplies lubricating fluids to joint areas. Bursa sacs can become inflamed, causing swelling and pain and a condition known as bursitis. In the hip, bursitis pain will most commonly be felt in the upper thigh area. However, other symptoms can occur.-
Fever
-
The area around the hip bursitis may also become inflamed and infected. Infection in the area may in turn result in a fever.
Swelling
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, because hip bursitis lies in the biggest joint and under some of the biggest muscle mass in the body, redness and swelling is rarely seen. If redness and swelling is seen in the area, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
Ischial Bursa
-
The least common cause of hip pain is the ischial bursa. The ischial bursa is located in the buttocks and causes pain while sitting. The ischial bursa is often called "weaver's bottom" or "tailor's bottom."
Hip Surgery
-
Hip surgery can often lead to hip bursa pain. While a hip may be fixed due to surgery, surgery can often add stress to the hip bursa. Swollen and inflamed tissue can lead to increased pain, while overcompensation while walking may also add extra pressure.
Treatment
-
Often, rest and/or immobilization of the hip are the first steps in treating hip bursitis. Applying ice and over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or pain relievers can also reduce effects.
