Different Types of Hand Splints
There are a number of reasons why an individual might use a hand split, including injuries to the wrist or hand. Doctors also use these with stroke patients who lose mobility in their hands. Each type of splint is used for a different reason.-
Pediatric Hand Splints
-
Pediatric hand splints are used by doctors treating children with hand and wrist injuries. These slide right over the hand and palm but keep the fingers and thumb free. They also come in brighter primary colors for children.
Wrist Brace
-
A wrist brace is a type of hand splint that keeps the wrist stationary but allows the fingers to move. It's often used in situations where the wrist is sprained or strained, but the patient still needs mobility in her fingers.
Resting Hand Splint
-
A resting hand splint keeps the hand in a resting position, with the fingers free and the palm flat. This is used in patients who suffer from hand cramps that force their hands into a fist.
Weight-Bearing Splints
-
Weight-bearing splints help in situations where the hand becomes weak and can't carry things. It helps build up muscle mass and strength.
Metal Hand Splint
-
A metal hand splint is used in situations where the patient breaks his hand. It keeps the hand in one position and prevents it from moving at all.
Thumb Spica Splint
-
The thumb spica splint prevents the thumb from moving and pushing against the palm. Doctors often use this type of splint with patients suffering from a broken thumb.
