Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery Precautions

Patients who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome sometimes have to undergo surgery in order to obtain relief from their symptoms. This surgery releases the transverse carpal ligament to relieve pressure on the median nerve.
  1. Precautions

    • Patients should expect symptoms to go away slowly as the nerve needs time to repair. Individuals should stop drinking and smoking so the body will heal more quickly, as well as eat a well-balanced diet.

    Post-Surgical Recommendations

    • The patient should put an ice pack on the affected wrist, four times/day, 20 minutes at a time. The wrist should be elevated to a point higher than the heart.

    Infection Prevention

    • If the patient gets the dressing dirty or wet, it should be removed and the surgical incision cleaned with a mild soap and water. Gently rinse it and blot it dry with a soft, clean towel and allow the site to air dry. Then put a clean dressing and elastic bandage over the incision.

    Infection Indicators

    • In the event the patient develops a fever which goes over 101 degrees F, sees redness around the surgical site, or experiences drainage an infection may be present. Medical treatment should be sought immediately.

    General Precautions

    • The patient should wear the dressing and splint for up to three weeks, depending on the doctor's orders. Strenuous activities which involve heavy use of the wrist should be avoided.
